How can I manage payments out of my bank account?

In terms of withdrawing cash, you can take cash out from most bank or building society-operated cash machines for free, however some machines can charge. These are often located in areas where it could be difficult to find a free-withdrawal machine such as entertainment complexes or independent shops such as newsagents. Machines will display charges before you can withdraw money and you will be asked if you want to proceed with the transaction first. Depending on the type of current account you have, you could also withdraw cash at Post Office branches.

Banks often place limits on how much you can withdraw at any one time or within a day – these are outlined when an account is first opened. If you try to withdraw more money than you have in your account, or more than you have agreed with your bank or building society, then your payment could be refused.

If you have a debit card, then can use it to make transactions in-store and online. Most shops and restaurants accept Visa, Maestro, Electron and Solo. You will need to authorise the payment by entering your personal identification number, also known as you PIN. The money is deducted from your account but this is normally deducted the following working day.

If you have a bill to pay such as a utility bill or rent, you can arrange for these to be paid from your account via a Direct Debit or a Standing Order. If you wish to cancel these accounts, for example you may switch to a different energy provider or move property, then you can cancel your Standing Order with your bank or building society or contact the company holding the Direct Debit directly and ask them to cancel the account you have with them.
